y sin embargo #29 :: last/s issue

If communication means to put something in common, is it possible, today, at the height of the era of communication, putting something in common? Or all we got are monologues?

This issue marks the 7th anniversary of the Barcelona based independent arts/culture magazine Y SIN EMBARGO and it is the last issue of their 4 seasonal publications cycle.

“Seven years of a periodical and independent publication is perhaps both necessary and a long enough time to verify or put into practice a set of ideas, wishes and adventures. YSE closes a cycle, but doesn’t close (neither literally nor metaforically).

New situations, new circumstances and, most of all, new wishes and interests consume and demand the always limited well of time and energy. We have grown in this seven years without any kind of sponsoring, there was never a financial support or even modest underpinnings to give any logic of survival to the publication. Everything has been done on breathhold, in a respiratory exercise, at times painful, even if oxygen (of course intangible) always managed to be there in the end. Nevertheless, these are times of generalised asphyxia and sometimes – even though nostalgia or stubbornness exert their seduction- it is necessary to dry the boat’s dock, caulk and face different courses. We will go on, but we will be other.

Thanks to all those who have been reading and watching and those who took part. You’ll be hearing from us.” fernandoprats, art director and the founder of Y SIN EMBARGO.

Y Sin Embergo magazine #26 :: uroborus issue

YSE#26: uroborus issue

dec.2010jan.feb.2011

Human ability for adaptation as cause and consequence. Do we change our environment to give solutions or do we change just because we’re able to adapt? Technology as an instrument for self-saturation. How much are we able to absorb? Seduction of a world that, through its advantages, drags us towards its logic? The “saturation”, defined as a situation in which solutions have turned into problems, the probable is less and less realized, and the improbable happens more and more.

barbara kruger :: past / present / future

Fragments of Barbara Kruger’s installation Past/present/future from the exhibition Taking Place at The Temporary Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam.

Barbara Kruger’s work with pictures and words addresses mass culture’s representations of power, identity and sexuality. As she has stated, “I work with pictures and words because they have the ability to determine who we are, what we want to be and what we become.” The range of Kruger’s works is broad—from photographic prints on paper and vinyl to videos, room-size installations, public commissions, printed matter, and a variety of merchandise. Using the language of direct address and words like “you,” “me,” “we,” and “they,” her works reach out into the social space of the spectator. In this installation, designed especially for the building’s largest gallery known as the Hall of Honor, Kruger wraps the floor and walls with printed texts that “speak” directly and loudly to the spectator in a chorus of voices. Her provocative, emotionally charged statements about how people regard and treat each other disrupt the decorum of a traditional museum space. Bringing the world into her work and her work into the world, she confronts stereotypes and clichés, shattering them with a rigorous critique, a generous empathy and a sharp wit. Y Sin Embargo #25 :: just a memory

The subject of this Y SIN EMBARGO issue is memory, its role, its functions, its updates upgrades, its new roles, dynamics, places and functions. To go beyond in the forcing of logic or critical readings around these questions, the present issue will not hace a permanent existence, available, ubiquitous, at hand, as a part of the shared memory that we humans have on the web; on the contrary, it will be lost, it will be a work sent directly to the void, where nothing supports it, as a fragile, dubious entity, or a pile of organized energy in a dissipative medium. Just like our old memories or all that we cannot download from our heads (or access anywhere), YSE#25 Just a memory will cease existing on October 5th, 2010.
